Prof. Piotr Ostalczyk was an outstanding member of the Polish automatic-control community and a pioneer of research on non-integer-order calculus in Poland. For many years he was affiliated with Lodz University of Technology and, from 2021 to 2024, also with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology.
His scientific work focused on the theory and applications of non-integer-order calculus, particularly in the modelling of dynamical systems and in control. He was the pioneer and the first researcher in Poland to systematically develop and promote applications of non-integer-order calculus in automation, dynamical modelling and control.
Professor Piotr Ostalczyk was the author of the first Polish-language monograph devoted to non-integer-order calculus. His scientific achievements, teaching activity and long-standing engagement in the academic community had a major impact on the development of this field in Poland and on the formation of the research community working on non-integer-order systems.
A special place in Professor Ostalczyk’s activity was occupied by the conference “Rachunek Różniczkowy Niecałkowitego Rzędu i Jego Zastosowania” (RRNR). Professor Piotr Ostalczyk conceived and organised the first edition of the conference, thereby initiating a recurring scientific event that over time became an important forum for exchange within the Polish community working on the theory and applications of non-integer-order calculus. In subsequent years he remained closely associated with RRNR, helping to shape its scientific character and to integrate the community around this research area.
The 12th International RRNR Conference 2027 is dedicated to the memory of Professor Piotr Ostalczyk — an outstanding scientist, academic teacher and advocate of non-integer-order calculus whose work and activity left a lasting mark on Polish automatic control.
